DICK’S Sporting Goods Open Welcomes Rookies

PGA TOUR’S 11th All-Time Monday Winner Joins 2014 DICK’S Sporting Goods Open Field

(ENDICOTT, NY)- The DICK’S Sporting Goods Open is proud to announce that Champions Tour Rookies Scott Verplank, Woody Austin, Kevin Sutherland, and Paul Goydos will join the 2014 Champions Tour Event Field.  The event will take place at En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott, New York.

This will be Scott Verplank’s third start in his first season on the Champions Tour.  He made his Champions Tour debut at the U.S. Senior Open Championship, and competed in last week’s 3M Championship.  Verplank joins us boasting 5 PGA TOUR wins and an amazing 94 Top-10 finishes.  He is currently ranked 11th in the PGA TOUR’s All-Time Money List.

Woody Austin made his Champions Tour debut at the U.S. Senior Open Championship, T3.  He has four PGA TOUR wins under his belt, and was the recipient of the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Award in 1995. Austin, by virtue of his victory at the 2013 Sanderson Farms Championship, has been fully exempt on the PGA TOUR this season.

Like Verplank, this will be Sutherland’s third start in his inaugural season on the Champions Tour.  He debuted this year at the U.S. Senior Open Championship in July, and competed at the 3M Championship last week.  He joins us with one PGA Tour victory at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in 2002, as well as five 2nd Place finishes.  In 2008 he placed in the Top-30 on the Money List, securing his place in the 2009 Masters.

Paul Goydos enters the 2014 DICK’S Sporting Goods Open field with two victories, the Sony Open (2007) and the Bay Hill Invitational (1996), six 2nd Place finishes, and an impressive 45 Top-10 finishes, all on the PGA TOUR.  He made his Champions Tour debut last week at the 3M Championship, T9.  Goydos was the 4th player in PGA TOUR history to shoot a 59 during competition play in 2010 at the John Deere Classic.

“We are thrilled to welcome these rookies back to Endicott after all these years,” said Tournament Director John Karedes.  “Another benefit of being a Champions Tour event is that each year, the ‘Rookie Class’ is actually a group of seasoned athletes!”

Scott Verplank competed in five B.C. Opens, most recently in 1997, T23.  Woody Austin completed in five B.C. Opens, most recently in 2003.  His best finish was T15 in 1996.  Kevin Sutherland’s only previous visit to Endicott was to compete in the 1996 B.C. Open.  Paul Goydos competed in the B.C. Open six times, his best finish in 1994, T7.
